Plantenasiel Haarlem was founded in early 2018 by two students who wanted to share their love for plants with the world. It is an initiative that rescues houseplants which cannot stay in their original home anymore, for example because they grew too big, are not thriving anymore, or the owner fell out of love with them.

Over the course of 2020, the Plantenasiel (literally translated: plant shelter) was handed over to a new team, which has since welcomed many more members and said goodbye to a few. We are situated at two different locations in Haarlem.
All donated plants will be cared for and kept at the location they were brought to until they find a new owner. All healthy plants are available for adoption during our opening hours. We ask adoptive plant parents for a voluntary (monetary) donation. Plantenasiel Haarlem is a non-profit organisation with a focus on sustainability and love for plants. Donations help us run our organisation and buy necessities such as potting soil, larger pots and fertiliser.
The team
At the moment, our team consists of 6 enthusiastic plant lovers with different backgrounds, ages and nationalities.
Are you also completely mad about houseplants and want to do more with them? Send us a non-binding message to see if the volunteer work is right for you! P.S. You don't (yet) need to be a plant expert to join us.
During our opening hours, we look after the plants in the shelter, receive and inspect donated plants, and help interested visitors choose plants to adopt.
Daarnaast beheren we deze website en onze social media accounts en beantwoorden we berichten met vragen over de verzorging van planten. Af en toe nemen we als Plantenasiel deel aan evenementen zoals de lentemarkt in de Kweektuin.
Would you like to get involved? Then send us an email and tell us a bit about yourself in a few sentences and why you would like to become a volunteer at the Plant Asylum. Green fingers are not a requirement; reliability and enthusiasm are more important.
